In a major boost for the Indian Defence Forces and Aatma Nirbharbharat initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will commission three frontline naval combatants INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer – at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday. The commissioning ceremony will take place at 10:30 AM.

Mumbai: In a major boost for the Indian Defence Forces and Aatma Nirbharbharat initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will commission three frontline naval combatants INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer – at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday. The commissioning ceremony will take place at 10:30 AM.

"The commissioning of three frontline naval combatants will strengthen our efforts towards being a global leader in defence and augment our quest towards self-reliance," PM Modi said in his X post on Tuesday.

INS Surat:

INS Surat is the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project. It belongs to the Visakhapatnam-class stealth guided-missile destroyers and ranks among the largest and most sophisticated destroyers in the world. INS Surat has an indigenous content of 75 per cent and is equipped with state-of-the-art weapon-sensor packages and advanced network-centric capabilities.

The other warships of this class are INS Visakhapatnam, INS Mormugao, INS Imphal. The warship has the distinction of being the first Artificial Intelligence-enabled warship of the Indian Navy.

INS Nilgiri:

INS Nilgiri is the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project. It has been designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau. INS Niligiri, the lead ship of the Nilgiri-class stealth guided missile frigates, incorporates advanced features for enhanced survivability, seakeeping, and stealth. all the features of the INS Nilgiri reflects the next generation of indigenous frigates.

INS Vaghsheer:

INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project. It represents India's growing expertise in submarine construction and has been constructed in collaboration with the Naval Group of France. It is a diesel-electric attack submarine based on the Scorpene class. It is capable of enemy radar evasion, area surveillance, intelligence gathering, advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro-dynamically optimised shape.

INS Vaghsheer can launch precision-guided weapons with both 18 torpedoes and tube-launched anti-ship missiles at the same time. It is 67.5 metres long with a beam of 6.2 metres, and has a maximum speed of 11 knots (20 km/h) surfaced and 20 knots (37 km/h) submerged. The warship has a maximum diving depth of 350 metres and can stay at sea for 50 days.
