Amritsar: At least 14 people lost their lives after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Amritsar's Majitha block on Monday. Meanwhile, six others are undergoing treatment. After receiving the information, medical teams were rushed to five villages of Amritsar.
Most of the victims belonged to Bhangali Kalan, Thariewal, Sangha and Marari Kalan villages of the block, reported Hindustan Times. The people in critical condition are undergoing treatment at Amritsar Civil Hospital. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney visited the hospital to take stock of the situation.
"An unfortunate tragedy has happened in Majitha. We got to know yesterday night, we received reports from 5 villages that those who consumed liquor yesterday are in critical condition. We rushed our medical teams. Our medical teams are still going door-to-door," Sawhney told news agency ANI.
"Whether people have some symptoms or not, we are taking them to hospital so that we can save them. 14 people have died so far. Govt is extending all the help possible. We are ensuring that this death toll doesn't increase," she added.
The police arrested the suppliers of the spurious liquor - Prabhjit Singh and Sahib Singh. An FIR has been registered in the matter. As per teh HT reports, four other accused, who brought the liquor from the suppliers and sold to villagers were also arrested.
A detailed investigation has been launched into the matter.
