Guwahati: Two candidates each from BJP and it's ally AGP seems to be won Rajya Sabha election uncontested with the announcement of it's candidates while Congress led Opposition still silent in this matter till filling the report.
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has announced to continue senior leader former union minister Birendra Prasad Baishya as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Assam, scheduled for June 19. Baishya, who has been a Rajya Sabha member since 2019 will continue the thrid term on the basis of seniority and experiences.
Baishya first elected as a Member of Lok Sabha from Mangaldoi in 1996 and served as the Union Minister of Steel and Mines that same year during H D Deve Gowra's led Third Front govt.
The senior leader holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Gauhati University (1979) and a Bachelor’s degree from Darrang College (1976). Baishya was also a Rajya Sabha MP in 2008 before his current term. The AGP formed a three-member committee earlier this week to select the candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat under the chairmanship of MP Phani Bhusan Chaudhury.
Despite hopes among 27 other younger party members for a fresh face, the party reaffirmed its trust in Baishya’s experience by selecting him again. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), AGP’s ally in Assam, announced Kanad Purkayastha, Secretary of BJP Assam Pradesh, as its candidate for the other Rajya Sabha seat.
Both parties hold one seat each in the upcoming elections, which are being held as the current MPs, Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Baishya (AGP), retire on June 14, 2025. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially nominated Kanad Purkayastha as its candidate for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections from Assam. Kanad is the son of octogenarian veteran Assam BJP leader former union minister Kabindra Purkayastha.
Expressing his gratitude, Purkayastha took to social media to say, “This gesture is not just an acknowledgment of my dedication and service to the party, but also a reaffirmation of the values we uphold—commitment, integrity, and selfless service.”

He added, “Assam is not just my home; it is my inspiration, my strength. To be considered for such a significant responsibility is both a great honour and a humbling moment in my journey. I remain ever committed to the ideals of our party and to the progress and unity of our beloved state and nation.”
