Police have arrested a young woman and are searching for her boyfriend after they allegedly murdered her mother in Lucknow's Chinhat area. The crime occurred during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday in Semra village.
According to police, 40-year-old Usha Singh, who worked as a housekeeper at the Audit Building, was brutally killed in her home. Investigators revealed that her daughter Lucky and boyfriend Shahid first strangled Usha with fabric before slitting her throat with broken glass. In a calculated attempt to disguise the murder as a sexual assault and robbery, the perpetrators removed the victim's clothing.
"After the murder, Lucky created a false narrative by alerting neighbours and family members that unknown assailants had killed her mother," said DCP East Shashank Singh. "However, inconsistencies in her story quickly raised suspicions."
The investigation took a decisive turn when Lucky broke down during interrogation and confessed to the crime. Primary investigation revealed that, family opposition to her relationship with Shahid was the primary motive.
The victim's brother Ravi told media that Shahid had been previously jailed after Usha filed a case against him when Lucky had eloped with him in 2024. "After his release, Shahid reconnected with Lucky, and they both repeatedly threatened my sister, blaming her for their separation and his imprisonment," Ravi stated.
Neighbours described a strained relationship between mother and daughter, with Usha often taking Lucky to work with her due to concerns about her behaviour.
While Lucky remains in custody, police have launched a manhunt for Shahid, who fled the scene after the murder.
