Veteran Bengali actress Basanti Chatterjee passed away at her Kolkata residence on Tuesday night after her long battle with cancer. She was 88 at the time of her demise. She was reportedly battling the condition for several years now.
The news of her demise was confirmed by West Bengal Motion Picture Artists' Forum. Chatterjee was reportedly admitted in the ICU of a private hospital in Kolkata, but the doctors eventually advised her to be kept under home observation.
Actor Bhaswar Chatterjee mourned her death and shared that she had been experiencing "a lot of physical pain" of late.
Soon after the news of Chatterjee's death surfaced online, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to her X handle and wrote, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of veteran television actress Basanti Chattopadhyay. Her death is an irreparable loss to our world of art and entertainment. I extend my condolences to her family, friends, and fans (sic)."

In her career spanning over five decades, Chatterjee acted in more than 100 films, including critically-acclaimed films like Alo, Thagini, Manjari Opera, and others. She had shared the screen with the biggest names of the Bengali film industry, including Uttam Kumar, Prosenjit, Rituparna Sengupta, and others.
Not just films, but she also became a household name with television shows like Bhutu, Durga Durgeshari, Boron, and others.
She was last seen in the show, Gita LLB, and it was during its shoot that she fell seriously ill and stepped back from work.
