Karan Johar in conversation with Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. No, this wasn't Season 9 of Koffee With Karan, but the first day of the WAVES Summit which had all three of the above under one roof for the session: The journey: From outsider to ruler.
But more than the discussions on Bollywood were the revealing conversarions about how probably the biggest star we have is awkward, shy and an introvert. A warm and comfortable feeling for all those introverts and shy people out there.
Karan on SRK, Deepika being awkward
"The one thing which Deepika and Shah Rukh have in common is they're both awkward in social situations. They are massive movie stars and have what is perceived as an extroverted personality, which is far from the truth."
"Shah Rukh is the most awkward at parties and even if you take him to a departmental store he would be awkward there. Isn't there a duality there? And an expectation to be what people perceive of you?"
SRK on how he survives parties
"I like Deepika because she is taller than me, so i can hide behind her. And if you're at Karan's party, its like a fancy dress competition where the dress code is 'gold and shimmery.' Ofcourse at a party, when i raise my hands like this (he does his signature step, and the crowd cheers) they all say 'Again youre doing this!' But when i do the same thing here, the reaction is different, so there isn't any duality, all of these are part of me. In parties i meet known strangers, outside i meet my own. "
The current 'image management' trend in Bollywood
But one of the most revealing and frank comments SRK made was on the current trend of image management in Bollywood and everyone 'always trying to be out there'- probably pointing towards the Insta trend of posting photos on literally anything and everything and trying to show that you're everywhere and doing everything. His take on the same? To post stuff which show your authentic side, not just for the heck of it.
It was the most cheered for event at the session, with a full house and then tonnes of people standing and and open conversation with the stars.
But probably the simplest quote that came out of SRK was this: "I dont give interviews nowadays because i have nothing new to say. "
