Youtuber Ranveer Allahbadia issued an unconditional apology on Monday afternoon amid the severe backlash he has been receiving over his crass remarks on the comedy show, India's Got Latent. Calling it a "lapse in judgement", Ranveer pleaded people to forgive him and also assured that the sections with the controversial remarks have been removed from the full video.
Ranveer took to his X handle to share a video apologising to the netizens. "My comment wasn't just inappropriate, it wasn't even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry," he said.
He went on to say, "Many of you asked if this is how I wish to use my platform and obviously, this is not how I wish to use it. I am not going to give any context or justification or reasoning behind whatever happened. I am just here for an apology."
Ranveer further continued, "I personally had a lapse in judgement... Wasn't cool on my part. The podcast is watched by people of all ages and I don't want to be the kind of person that takes that responsibility lightly, and family is the last thing that I would ever disrespect."
"I need to use this platform better, that's been my learning from this whole experience. I promise to just get better. I have asked the makers of the video to remove the insensitive sections from the video," he added.
"All I can say in the end is I am sorry. I hope you will forgive me as a human being," he concluded.
What is the India's Got Latent controversy?
It all began after Ranveer appeared as one of the guests on Samay Raina's show India's Got Latent, and during one of the segments, he asked a contestant, "Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life — or would you join in once and stop it forever?"
This did not go down well with social media users, who bashed the Youtuber left, right and centre, and called his comment outright disgusting and indecent.
A complaint was later registered against Ranveer, Samay and Apoorva over the alleged use of 'abusive language' on the show and for 'promoting obscenity'.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too condemned the incident, and assured that "strict action" will be taken. "Certain things have been said and presented in a very wrong manner, as I have come to know... This is absolutely wrong. Everyone has the right to freedom of speech, but our freedom ends where we encroach upon someone else’s freedom. This is not right. I believe that even expression has its limits," Fadnavis said.
