The controversy around 'Lady Superstar' Nayanthara's documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale, is far from over. Days after actor Dhanush sued the actress and the makers of the documentary for using clips without his permission, the makers of the 2005 film Chandramukhi have now taken legal action against the documentary's producers for similar reasons.

According to a report by LiveLaw, the Madras High Court sent legal notices to Netflix and Tarc Studio LLP on July 8, after a complaint was lodged by AP International, the company that owns the copyright to Chandramukhi. In their complaint, they claimed that scenes from their film were used in the documentary without their due permission.

AP International said that Netflix and the producers used clips from the film found on YouTube instead of buying the rights officially from them. The complainants further said that they had also sent a notice asking the makers to stop using the clips and demanded Rs 5 crore in damages.

The producers reportedly tried to get the rights only after receiving the warning.

But AP International, which is now in no mood to approve the permission, has moved court demanding a complete ban on the use of Chandramukhi scenes in the documentary. It also sought the removal of all the clips from the film in the documentary.

Nayanthara-Dhanush row

Back in January this year, Dhanush filed a suit against Nayanthara and her husband Vignesh Shivan for using a 3-second clip from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which was produced by Dhanush himself. He claimed that the clip was used by the actress in her Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale without seeking his permission.

Dhanush had allegedly sued the makers of the documentary for Rs 10 crore for using the 3-second clip.

Nayanthara then wrote an open letter to Dhanush on social media, criticising him, stating, "I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in audio launches in front of your innocent fans but clearly you do not practice what you preach, at least not for me and my partner."

Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale released on Netflix in November 2024. It tells the story of actress Nayanthara’s life, her marriage to Vignesh Shivan, and their journey as parents to twin sons.
