Manoj Kumar, celebrated for his iconic patriotic films and fondly known as 'Bharat Kumar', passed away at the age of 87 on Friday at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

According to medical reports, he succumbed to cardiogenic shock caused by acute myocardial infarction - a severe heart attack. He had also been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which had impacted his overall health, as reported by ANI.

Manoj Kumar was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, following a deterioration in his condition. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, his health continued to decline, leading to his demise in the hospital's Andheri facility.

Several celebs and renowned personalities, including Akshay Kumar, Vivek Agnihotri, Ranveer Singh, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hema Malini, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, businessman Anand Mahindra, and others took to their social media to express their grief.

Born as Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, Manoj Kumar became a notable figure in Hindi cinema, particularly for his films that celebrated nationalism.

He gained recognition with films such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), many of which he also directed. His performance in Upkar solidified his patriotic image, leading to his famous nickname.

Beyond his patriotic films, he starred in several other acclaimed movies, including Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal and Kranti.

For his contributions to Indian cinema, he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.
