Maalik Review: Rajkummar Rao is undoubtedly one of the most versatile actors we have in Bollywood. However, until now, we had not seen him playing an anti-hero character in a mass entertainer. But with Maalik, the actor has explored a new genre. However, the film doesn't justify his talent. So, is Maalik worth your money and time? Read on to know that...

The movie is set in the late 80s and revolves around Maalik (Rajkummar Rao), who is a gangster in Allahabad (now Prayagraj). After becoming one of the biggest gangsters, he now dreams of entering politics. But, of course, he has to face the cops and the other goons in the city. So, will Maalik be able to fulfil his dream of travelling in a Laal Batti wali gadi?

Maalik is written by Jyotsana Nath and Pulkit, and the latter has also directed the movie. Pulkit had helmed Bhumi Pednekar starrer Bhakshak, and it had left us quite impressed. So, even from Maalik, we had good expectations. However, the film fails to impress.

The story of Maalik is something that we have watched multiple times. A guy from a poor family becomes a gangster, and then he wants to enter politics. One of the examples would be Raees, but of course, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer was a much better film.

Maalik starts on a very dull note, and nothing interesting happens in the first 45-50 minutes. The movie picks up very well in the pre-interval sequence, and you feel that, finally now it will get better. But, once again, after the interval, the movie dips and fails to keep us hooked to the screen. There are hardly any thrilling or dramatic sequences, and even action scenes are very regular.

Apart from the pre-interval sequence and an emotional scene in the second half, Maalik doesn't offer anything great. Even the big twist in the climax is predictable.

Maalik Review - Actors' Performance

Rajkummar Rao's performance overall is strictly decent. The movie just gives him a couple of scenes to shine. However, the actor is fantastic in an emotional scene that comes in the second half. Manushi Chhillar doesn't have much to do in the film, and her performance is just fine.

Anshumaan Pushkar, who was amazing in 12th Fail, has done a good job here. Other supporting actors like Prosenjit, Saurabh Shukla, Swanand Kirkire, and Saurabh Sachdeva are decent in their respective roles.

Maalik Review - Music

The songs of Maalik are strictly average, and even the dance number featuring Huma Qureshi doesn't leave a strong mark. However, the background score is good.

Maalik Review - Final Verdict

Overall, Maalik is a dull gangster drama that offers nothing new. Even if you are a Rajkummar Rao fan, you will be disappointed!
