Actress Kangana Ranaut is all set to play the role of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, in her upcoming film, Emergency. During the promotions, the actress, who is known for calling out nepotism in the film industry, stated that Gandhi too was a "product of nepotism".

Kangana told IANS that despite having an anti-nepotism stance, she has played Indira Gandhi in Emergency with utmost sincerity. "Clearly, Indira Gandhi was a product of nepotism. But what happens is when I meet certain people, like in our film industry, who I don't like or don't want to be like, still I will play a character with utmost sensibility because being an artist means not having any coloured perception," she explained.

Counting the privileges that Gandhi enjoyed, Kangana further said, "I may come from a party that belongs to the people, as the name suggests, but I can still have a very sensitive approach to someone who comes from a privileged background. Indira Gandhi came from a very privileged background. She was a three-time Prime Minister and daughter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. She became the secretary and got all the best ministries, what more privilege can you ask for? Yes she is privileged, but that does not mean I cannot have a sensible portrayal of her."

During the interview, Kangana also stated that she met Priyanka Gandhi in the parliament and invited her to watch Emergency.

"It's a very sensitive and sensible portrayal of one episode and one personality. And I have taken great care to portray Gandhi with great dignity," she said.

Emergency, which also marks Kangana's directorial debut, is scheduled to release in theatres on January 17. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Mahima Chaudhry, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, and others in key roles.
