Veteran actor Anupam Kher weighed in on the Sardaar Ji 3 controversy that erupted after Punjabi singer-actor starred in the film with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, despite a ban on artist from the neighbouring country. Kher said that while Diljit exercised his freedom of expression, the actor himself would not do anything similar even if it's for the sake of cinema and art.

"It's his fundamental right. He has full freedom to exercise his right and he should be given freedom to exercise it. I can say from my point of view that maybe I wouldn't do what he did," Kher told NDTV.

Kher likened India to his own family, and said that if he had a neighbour who slapped his father, but was a great singer and artist, he would not invite him to perform at his house. "I am not that great. I won't hit him back, but I won't give him the right," he said.

"The rule that I practice at my home, I practice in my country. I am not that great that I could see my family get hit or see my sister's sindoor get destroyed for art. Those who can do so, they have all the freedom," he added.

Sardaar Ji 3 controversy

Diljit was brutally criticised for sharing the screen with Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3 amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terrorist attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor.

While the makers released the film only outside India, Diljit had clarified that Hania was cast and the film was shot much before the Pahalgam attack, and that they had to release the film as the makers could not afford the financial loss otherwise.
