The University Grants Commission (UGC) is going to authorise foreign universities to establish campuses in India. This has been done to give students an education from foreign universities at home rather than abroad.

There are three foreign universities currently functioning in India. Rules have been changed by the government to allow foreign institutions to enter the Indian education system.

As per Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, approx 14 to 15 lakh Indian students study higher education overseas, leading to an outflow of funds. In their bid to offer students educational opportunities in the country, the government plans to let foreign universities open up campuses in India.

More than 50 reputable international universities have expressed interest in receiving UGC recognition and are negotiating with state governments, according to Dharmendra Pradhan.

"Approvals will be granted after these universities have been evaluated in accordance with our standards. Pradhan stated that this action is in the best interests of the pupils.

The UGC will assess these foreign universities based on its criteria and issue approvals. Pradhan stated this is in the interests of the students and will help them attain opportunities for education.

The government has further committed itself to supporting institutional autonomy and ensuring foreign universities will have self-governance once settled in India. And desires to keep standards up within the education system. In response to a question about punishments for universities that breach rules, Pradhan said the government will take necessary steps.
