A serious incident has come to light at the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) in West Bengal, where a female student has accused a fellow student of drugging and raping her inside the boys' hostel. The alleged assault took place on Friday.
The woman lodged a formal complaint at the Haridevpur Police Station later that evening. Acting swiftly on her statement, police registered a case and arrested the accused student.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the reported incident on the IIM-Calcutta campus. The institute has not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter.
As reported by the news agency PTI, the woman claimed in her statement that she was invited to the boys' hostel at IIM-Calcutta under the guise of a counselling session. During the meeting, she consumed a drink, which she suspects was laced with drugs, causing her to lose consciousness.
When she regained consciousness, she alleged that she had been sexually assaulted. According to a police official, the woman also said that the accused intimidated her, warning of serious consequences if she spoke about the incident, as per the report.
The male student was detained on Friday night and later formally arrested. Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the matter.
