In a major overhaul of the existing exam system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that from the 2026 academic year, board exams for Class 10 will be held twice a year.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has termed this as a "much-needed step", stressing its function of declining exam stress, providing flexibility, and improving the learning experience.
"Laudable and a much-needed step. This will reduce exam stress, provide more flexibility and foster a joyful learning environment. A key recommendation of NEP 2020, twice-a-year exams is a student-centric approach and also aligns with global education practices," Pradhan posted on X.
The move is in keeping with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes student-friendly and forward-looking assessment systems.

Major Modifications in the CBSE Class 10 Exam Pattern
- Two Board Exam Chances within a Year
There will be two opportunities now for students to appear in the board exams in a single academic session:
Phase 1: For everyone, held in February
Phase 2: Optional, held in May, for students wanting to upgrade their marks
- Best Score to Form Final Result
If a candidate gives both exams, the higher of both scores will be used in the final mark sheet. This eliminates the pressure of the first attempt and provides space for better performance without loss of marks.
- Reduced Stress and Improved Flexibility
The twin-exam system is meant to de-stress the single high-stakes test. It allows students ample time and opportunities to do their best pace, suited to various learning speeds and ways.
- Empulsion on Continual and Regular Learning
Instead of cramming at the eleventh hour, this system gets students into year-round study routines. It encourages better understanding and retention, shifting away from memorisation exercises.
- Better Mental Health and Wellness
With reduced pressure and a more supportive framework, students stand to have improved mental health results. The ability to enhance outcomes minimises stress and increases confidence.
- Streamlined Internal Assessments
Internal assessments are now to be held annually, making it easier for teachers to assess and minimizing extra stress for students. They will continue to contribute significantly to final marks.
