Delhi University officially welcomed its newest batch of undergraduate students today with orientation programs held across its affiliated colleges and departments. As classes are expected to begin in the coming days, students are brimming with excitement, nervous energy, and hope for what lies ahead.
Freshers from different corners of Delhi and across India shared their experiences from the admission process to course choices, and their dreams for the future.
A Prestigious Choice for Ambitious Goals
“I have been allotted Shaheed Bhagat Singh Evening College with BCom, and orientation is on August 1. Delhi University is the most acclaimed and prestigious university centrally and is one of the best,” said a fresher.
“I chose BCom because it will eventually help me with future courses of action towards my career. I was born and brought up in Delhi, so that is also one of the reasons to choose DU. The admission process was totally exhausting and tiring because it took too long for the administration to take out CUET results and allocations. I’m excited about the fests, cultural activities, and meeting students from different regions of India. My future goals are towards the field of core finance and Chartered Financial Analysis,” the student added.
This year, among all the courses, BCom (Hons) has gained the highest popularity, receiving a staggering 19,90,966 applications, making it the most sought-after undergraduate programme across the university. Delhi University is offering a total of 71,624 undergraduate seats this year, spread across 79 different programmes in 69 affiliated colleges.
Philosophy, Political Science & Passion for Societies
Tanishka, a student at Lakshmibai College, shared her excitement as her orientation is scheduled for August 1, with classes expected to begin soon. She chose Delhi University for its quality education and supportive faculty who also encourage participation in extracurricular activities. Although she found the admission portal slightly slow in updating, she is particularly looking forward to studying philosophy and political science, and engaging with the university’s societies and clubs.
Disappointment Over Course, But Eyes Set on CS
Jyoti, a student from West Delhi, shared her mixed experience. “I got IHE (Institute of Home Economics), and my course is B.El.Ed. Delhi University is a government institute and popular for its studies. I live in Delhi, that’s why I chose DU. I’m not that excited since I didn’t get the course I desired. I am going to pursue Company Secretary now.”

Close to Home, But A New Life Begins
For some students, convenience was a major factor in choosing Delhi University. Lucky, who enrolled in the BA Programme with Hindi and History, chose DU primarily due to its proximity and felt it was the most suitable option. He is looking forward to meeting new friends and beginning a new chapter in life.
From Jaipur to Delhi – A Journey of Growth
Aryan, now enrolled in the M.Com programme at the Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics (DSE), reflected on his academic journey, noting that his initial goal was to pursue an MA in Economics from DSE. Although he didn’t secure admission to that programme, he chose M.Com as a backup and feels confident in his decision, acknowledging that the Department of Commerce is among the best for M.Com studies.
“I came here from Jaipur just two days ago. It’s a little overwhelming to be honest, but the metro system is nice. During the admission process, there was a hiccup—my department issued a notice stating that July 25 would be the last date for physical verification. So I had to do a quick trip on the 22nd to get it done. They later said they would extend the deadline, but I didn’t want to risk it,” he said.
“As for accommodation, it's tricky. I’m planning to stay with my relatives for about a week or two while searching for a decent PG within my budget. It’s nice to get out of the house and study in a different city, especially the capital. I’m hoping to make the most of these 2 years. I plan to go into corporate jobs in finance and analysis — which isn’t that exciting to me. Interestingly, many of my M.Com peers are aiming for academia,” he added.
College Life, Career Dreams, and a Love for Language: A New Start at DU
Riddhi Verma, a student from East Delhi, is all set to begin her journey at Delhi University. Drawn by the university's academic prestige and vibrant campus life, she sees DU as the ideal place to grow both intellectually and personally.
“I chose DU for its prestigious colleges and the countless opportunities it offers,” she said, adding that the university's environment is perfect for grooming personalities alongside academics.
Opting for English Honours, Riddhi’s decision was driven by her love for literature and a fascination with the deeper meanings behind how language is crafted. “Pursuing English Honours felt right because of my passion for reading and understanding how sentences are written,” she explained. She believes that being in Delhi adds value to her educational journey by exposing her to a competitive and inspiring crowd.
Orientation events will continue over the next few days, as freshers settle into their new campuses. DU’s rich academic environment, cultural diversity, and active student societies continue to be key attractions for newcomers.
Meanwhile, ahead of the new academic session starting on August 1, over 55% of students at Delhi University have opted to continue into the fourth year of their studies under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). This marks a significant shift in student preference toward the extended academic structure.
