A private NDA coaching centre tutor in Dehradun has been booked after allegedly punishing an 18-year-old Meghalaya student with 400 sit-ups for talking during class. The student then had to be hospitalised because of extreme pain in the legs and back, swelling, and muscle spasms, making him bedridden.

The incident allegedly took place on July 4, but the family of the student had initially declined to go to authorities, anticipating that the institute would take internal disciplinary measures. The father, however, lodged a police complaint after alleged inaction and mounting distress.

An FIR has been registered under Section 117(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on charges of voluntarily causing grievous hurt. Vasant Vihar police station inspector Pradeep Singh Rawat confirmed that an investigation is underway, according to the Times of India report.

According to the reports, the father of the student also alleged harassment and intimidation at the institute, saying he had received threatening calls from its legal representatives and that his son was pressured into attending classes despite his physical condition. Several complaints to the institute reportedly went unheard.

The authorities confirmed the case was first reported in Meghalaya and later shifted to Dehradun. Further legal action will be determined based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
