India is hosting the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Mumbai from today, August 11, till August 21, with over 300 high school students from 64 countries. The event, organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, will formally begin with an opening ceremony on August 12 at Jio World Convention Centre.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the event at the Jio World Convention Centre. Along with him will be other distinguished scientific leaders such as Dr. Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, and Dr. Ajit Kembhavi, former Vice President of the International Astronomical Union.
The Closing Ceremony on August 21 will be held at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. The event will be led by ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan and Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Homi Bhabha National Institute Chancellor.
A Global Platform for Young Astronomers
Launched in 2007 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the IOAA was created in 2006 with the objective of encouraging greater interest in astronomy and astrophysics among students at the school level from all over the world. It has been hosted by nations in Asia, Europe, and South America since its inception, including Brazil, China, Greece, Iran, Hungary, and Colombia.
This year's edition maintains the tradition of testing the best and brightest minds through a multi-round contest featuring theoretical problems, observation exams, and data analysis challeges. A special team round is added to foster cross-border collaboration and teamwork.
Centrally Located and Weather-Ready Arrangements
To ensure convenience and safety during Mumbai’s monsoon season, all student participants will stay at The Westin Powai Lake, which also serves as the main venue for all academic activities, including the theory, data analysis, and observational exams.
Meanwhile, team leaders and academic mentors will be accommodated at The St. Regis Hotel in Worli, which will also host all jury meetings, moderation sessions, and official deliberations.
