Sanjay Kumar Mishra, former head of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), has been appointed to the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM). Mishra, known to be close to PM Modi, was given multiple extensions at the helm of affairs at ED, a law enforcement agency for economic and financial offences.

This position holds the rank of secretary. The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister or EAC-PM is an independent body that is responsible for providing the prime minister with important updates and advice on crucial economic matters.

The polices and suggestions adopted by the council therefore hold a lot of significance.

This appointment comes after the death of the body's former chairman, Bibek Debroy, who passed away on 1 November 2024, at the age of 69.

The body is currently headed by Suman Bery.

Sanjay Mishra Ed Tenure

Mishra known for his purported proximity to the PM, was previously in the news for the multiple extensions that he got while leading the ED.

Sanjay Kumar Mishra was first appointed interim director of ED for three months in October 2018.

Thereafter, he was made the full-time chief in November 2018 for a two-year fixed tenure. Mishra's stint as head of the body, which also involved an ordinance in the parliament and multiple other unprecendted steps, came to an end in September 2023, after almost 5 years.

Mishra started off as an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer in 1984. Before his tenure at the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the IRS officer was posted as chief commissioner of Income Tax in Delhi.

Mishra is a native of Uttar Pradesh.

Mishra's time at the ED, apart from his multiple extensions, was also known for the actions taken by the body under his stewardship.

ED under him took action and initiated severe cases against high-profile public figures, many of whom were leaders of opposition political parties, that were or are not a part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance or NDA, which itself is led by the BJP.
