Manipur, Marred By Conflict, Records High Inflation Of 9.4% As National ROI Eases To 5.22% In December

When we look at the other major states, northern Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana have also recorded high levels of inflation.

The inflation data for the month of December is in, and the inflation rate for India eased to 5.22 per cent, compared to November's 5.48 per cent. This inflation rate is as per estimates of analysts who have claimed that the inflation rate will hover around 5 per cent.

Manipur Records Sky-High Inflation

This figure for the last month of the bygone year (2024) is still higher than the RBI's primary threshold of 4 per cent inflation.

When we take a look at the states, conflict-ridden Manipur recorded the highest inflation rate among states. The northeastern state recorded has a consumer price index (CPI) level of 9.4 per cent. This is almost twice the national rate.

Manipur's violent conflict due to ethinic tensions between Kuki and Meitei communities has been going on since 2023.

Inflation In North

When we look at the other major states, northern Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana have also recorded high levels of inflation.

Here, Uttar Pradesh had an inflation rate of 6.26 per cent, and Bihar had a ROI of 7.36 per cent.

And Haryana had an inflation rate of 6.08 per cent. All, are above the national average.

Inflation in South

Meanwhile, when we come to the southern states, the rate of inflation here among the five states stood at an average of 5 per cent, lower than the average.

Here, Kerala once again, had the highest rate of inflation at 6.36 per cent. The newest Indian state of Telangana had one of the lowest inflation rate of 3.14 per cent.

When we look at the overall inflation rate in the country, rural inflation remained higher than urban inflation. Rural inflation however dropped to 5.76 per cent, from November's 5.95 per cent. Urban inflation also lowered in intensity compared previous month, dipping to 4.58 per cent from the high of 4.89 per cent.
