Palghar, Maharashtra: Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, and a delegation of senior company officials visited the Tarapur Maharashtra Site (TMS) to gain insights into nuclear power technology and its operational aspects. The visit, which took place on Sunday, was marked by a high level of confidentiality, with Adani arriving by helicopter for the briefing. The group’s delegation included senior officials from Adani Energy and Adani Green Energy.
The TMS, located in Palghar, Maharashtra, houses two atomic power stations and is a key part of India's nuclear power infrastructure. During their visit, Adani and the senior officials from Adani Energy, Adani Green, and the conglomerate’s energy strategy division, were briefed on the current state of India’s nuclear energy sector. The briefing also provided a comprehensive overview of the future outlook for nuclear power, with a particular focus on its strategic importance in India’s energy transition.
The visiting delegation was given a tour of the TAPS 3 and 4 plant areas, where they were provided with a comprehensive overview of the plant's operations. Experts at the site elaborated on the critical technological features, safety protocols, and the role of nuclear energy in India’s ongoing energy transition.
The visit comes at a time when the nuclear energy sector is poised for expansion. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently proposed opening up the nuclear power sector to private players in the 2025-26 Budget. She also announced Rs 20,000 crore Nuclear Energy Mission aimed at advancing research and development in the field, with plans to establish five small modular reactors by 2033.
Adani’s visit is seen as a step toward the group’s potential involvement in the sector, particularly in light of the recent developments in Palghar district. In recent months, the area has seen increased interest in nuclear energy due to its growing industrial and infrastructural developments, including the launch of the Vadhavan Port project by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few months ago. As part of efforts to meet the region’s rising energy needs, there are discussions about setting up a new nuclear power project from the private sector in Palghar.

Given the strategic location of the district, with coastal areas like Chinchani, Varor, Gungavada, Dhakti Dahanu, Narpad, and Chikhla in Dahanu taluka, exploration is underway to identify suitable land for the project. These areas are close to the Vadhavan Port, which is expected to spur further economic development in the region, thereby increasing the demand for reliable energy sources.
The growing interest in nuclear power in Palghar highlights the importance of sustainable energy solutions for the district’s future growth. With the potential for a private-sector nuclear power project, Palghar may soon become a key player in India’s energy landscape, supporting both the region’s industrial expansion and the country’s transition to cleaner energy sources.
