The city of Bengaluru and its civic amenities and facilities have been in the news for a significant part of 2025. Now, in a new development, the IT hub, Silicon Valley of India, has a new set of taxes for its citizens.
Garbage Tax
Starting today, April 1, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city's topmost civic body, will levy a Solid Waste Management (SWM) user fee or Garbage Tax. This will be a mandatory fee.
This new set of fees or taxes is being levied to better facilitate waste collection and disposal in the city.
As according to the Hindustan Times, the new tax will be levied on the basis or the size of the land occupied.
Rs 685 Crore Targeted Revenue
Bengaluru is one of the largest cities in India, with an estimated population of over 1.4 crore. Therefore, the city generates a significant amount of garbage.
In addition, major bulk waste generators who do not follow in-situ waste processing would gave a penalty and, therefore, will have to pay an additional Rs 12 per kilogram of waste.
Through this new measure, the city's civic body intends to accrue a total revenue of Rs 685 crore in the new fiscal year.
Interestingly, an amount of Rs 1,400 crore was allocated to the city's the city's Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) for better waste management infrastructure.
Bengaluru Transport Crisis
The city and its civic amenities previously hit the headlines when Namma Metro (the City's Rapid Transit System) authorities faced intense criticism and backlash over the hike in metro fares.
This hike in metro fares led to protests from the opposition and citizens alike, who demanded a rollback of the fare hikes.
Previously, it was also reported that the city's bus services as saw a hike in their fare, adding to the fiscal burden of citizens.
