Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has hinted at layoffs given the AI boom that the world has seen in the last few years. Jassy has confirmed that the company will need fewer people as Amazon pushes for greater efficiency with the help of Generative AI. While the exact severity of the outcome or how many people will be laid off has not been mentioned, but the note is basically a heads up to the employees asking them to brace for layoffs in the future.

The note, shared by Jassy on its public blog as well, talks about the rapid advancements of AI and its impact on business efficiency and operations. Bloomberg reports that Amazon is expected to announce cuts as early as next month.

“As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done. We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” Jassy wrote in his note to the employees.

He added, “It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.”

Amazon says that it has built oover 1,000 Generative AI services, with more applications in progress. Earlier this, the company said that it would invest $100 million in building AI technologies. Jassy called AI a ‘one-in-a-lifetime technology’ and confirmed that it will change the way the company operates.
