Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A large number of students of Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) staged protest outside the bungalow of institute director Karunesh Kumar Shukla demanding his resignation on Tuesday afternoon. The protest follows use of force against students by police on Sunday night.
Two groups of first and second year students had clashed on the MANIT campus at 10.30 pm on Sunday. The police had reached the spot and lathicharged the second-year students. It is alleged that the police entered the hostel and beat them up, while they had nothing to do with the dispute. After the incident, many students did not attend class on Monday.
A Sufi Night was held at MANIT on Sunday night under E-Summit 2025. After this, the second year students stopped the first year students, due to which the dispute started. Then, the first year students threw stones at the second year students. In response, the second year students threw stones at the first year hostellers. More than 30 students were involved in the incident. About 8 students were injured. According to MANIT management, the second year students reached the first year students’ hostel to take revenge and vandalised it. Students tried to stop the MANIT director's car.
It is alleged that the director slapped a student, which director Shukla denied. “We just want the resignation of the director. He called police and we were lathicharged on his direction. Also, he put many restrictions on students,” a student said wishing anonymity. A new video of the ruckus in the campus has surfaced. Students were seen provoking policemen who had come to maintain law and order. Students kept provoking policemen for lathicharge. In other videos, students were seen carrying sticks and rods in their hands. Students abused the policemen.
