Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): BJP Madhya Pradesh has slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after a video went viral showing him wearing shoes while paying tribute to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Bhopal.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also expressed his disappointment over Rahul Gandhi not removing his shoes while offering floral tribute to Indira Gandhi.
“Unhone Gandhi ji ko pushpanjali di aur jhoote nahi utare, ye mujhe jacha nahi. Ye humare sanskaar ke virudh hai. Unko iska thoda dhyan rakhna chahiye,” he added.

In the video, Rahul Gandhi can be seen walking towards Indira Gandhi’s photo with his shoes on. He picks up some flower petals from the table placed in front of the photo and then throws them back in front of her image.
BJP has taken strong objection to this act, claiming it shows a lack of basic respect.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also commented on Rahul Gandhi’s visit while speaking to media persons. He said, “Aaj mujhe jaankaari mili ki humare rajya ke andar Neta Pratipaksh aaye hain. Aana chahiye, koi baat nahi, loktantra mein aane ka sabko adhikaar hai.”
However, CM Yadav expressed his disappointment over Rahul Gandhi not removing his shoes while offering floral tribute to Indira Gandhi. “Unhone Gandhi ji ko pushpanjali di aur jhoote nahi utare, ye mujhe jacha nahi. Ye humare sanskaar ke virudh hai. Unko iska thoda dhyan rakhna chahiye,” he added.
The Chief Minister said such acts go against Indian values and cultural traditions, and leaders should be more mindful of their conduct during such moments.

Sharing the video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), BJP Madhya Pradesh wrote in the caption:
“Rahul Gandhi ka ghamand to dekho, khud apne poorvaj ko joote pehenkar aur phool fenk kar pushpanjali arpit kar rahe hain.”
The post accused Rahul Gandhi of arrogance and questioned how someone can show such behaviour even while paying respects to their own family member.
Rahul Gandhi came to Bhopal to strengthen the Congress party’s base in Madhya Pradesh, especially after the party's poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where it failed to win a single seat in the state.
As the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, his visit is focused on rebuilding the organisation and boosting the morale of party workers.
He is scheduled to hold three important meetings, including one with district and block presidents, to discuss the party’s future strategy and reconnect with the grassroots leadership.
