Chhatarpur (Madhya Pradesh): The mother of a newlywed woman alleged her daughter died under mysterious circumstances in her in-laws’ house in ward number five under Bijawar police station on April 23. The woman, Bhagunti Devi, a resident of Dapkoi village under Isha Nagar police station, submitted a memorandum to the collector on Friday. In the memorandum, she alleged that she had married off her daughter Urmila to Haricharan Kushwaha, aka Deepak, on April 21 last year.

She gave enough dowries for Urmila’s wedding.  Bhagunti Devi alleged that although she had given ₹50,000 to her son-in-law, his family members demanded ₹50,000 again after the marriage.

She said she had talked to her daughter for the last time on May 23. Urmila told her mother that her husband Haricharan, mother-in-law Prem Bai and father-in-law Munnalal used to beat her up.

On the same night, Urmila died under mysterious circumstances. The in-laws of Urmila did not inform her family members about her death.

According to the memorandum, Bhagunti Devi received a call in the morning of April 24 that Urmila was critically ill. When Urimla’s relatives reached her in-laws’ house, they found her dead. There were marks of injury on her body, they alleged.

A stick and broken bangles were found near her body. The family members immediately lodged a complaint at the Bijawar police station.

The family members of Urmila demanded an inquiry into the case and punishment against her in-laws. They also handed over to the police the wedding cards and the photographs of the spot where her body was found.
