Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday that the party wants to give more power to the district chiefs in picking candidates for assembly elections.

He made the statement at the meeting of District Congress Committee presidents of nine states, including MP, at the AICC office in New Delhi.

While the AICC is trying to give more power to the DCC presidents, their tenure may be reduced from five years to anything between two and four years.

In his address, Gandhi said he wanted to extend the party organisation to the booth level, and the DCC presidents would be responsible for the work.

The meeting also decided that the AICC will release an activity calendar according to which the DCC chiefs will work. The AICC will monitor the activities, bypassing the state unit.

Before the meeting, the DCC chiefs had submitted organisation details of their respective districts, such as member information and property details at the district and block level, to the AICC.

Sources said the AICC may ask party workers to collect voter data along with caste details in a step towards a caste census.

Commenting on a party-hopper, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Everyone can see their situation in the party for which they left the Congress.”
