Madhya Pradesh: Non-Brahmins Studying Karma Kand In University

Karma Kanda, which is in Sanskrit, refers to sixteen types of Cedic rituals dealing with prayers performed for worldly or spiritual benefits for individuals.

Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): The study of Vedic rituals (Karma Kand) is attracting the youth including non-Brahmins and tribals given the rise in online demand for performing prayers. The students believe it to be a job-oriented course.

Karma Kanda, which is in Sanskrit, refers to sixteen types of Vedic rituals dealing with prayers performed for worldly or spiritual benefits for individuals.

Traditionally, Brahmins have performed these rituals for generations, but now academicians have opened it for others also.

In Karma Kand certain prayers are performed for specific context of an individual, Rani Durgavati University guest lecturer Dr Usha Shukla said. The Sanskrit mantras are recited during the rituals including performing yagnas, she said. The only care one has to take is to chant the mantra in particular Sanskrit syllable to have impact of benefit to the individual, she said.

The mantras associated with a particular Karma Kanda ritual are chanted during performance. 

The course has been going on for the past four years. Senior professor Dr Akhilesh Mishra said many non-Brahmin students who passed the Karma Kand course are doing their jobs efficiently.

There is wide scope for job recruitment in the Army too. According to the teachers the students are even getting job of Junior Commission Officer (Dharma Guru) in the Army wherein the diploma course in Karma Kand is mandatory besides the aspirants have to ensure that they qualify in the physical test.
