Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): State is facing heavy rain, strong winds, and hailstorms, with this weather expected to continue until May 8.

On Sunday, Indore received a record 70 mm (almost 3 inches) of rain in just 9 hours. Hail also fell in Bhopal and other districts.

Usually, May is the hottest month in Madhya Pradesh. In the past 10 years, temperatures have reached as high as 47–48°C in some cities. Along with heatwaves during the day, nights also remain hot. Rain in May is also common, and this year it has started early, with several districts seeing rain on the first few days of the month.

Senior weather expert Dr. Arun Sharma said the reason for this change is due to western disturbances, a cyclonic circulation, and a trough system. These systems caused Sunday’s storms, rain, and hail, and similar conditions will continue on Monday as well. Wind speeds in some areas may reach 50 to 60 km/h.

On Sunday, hail and heavy rain hit Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, and Khandwa. In Indore, rain started around 5 PM with thunder and strong winds, and continued late into the night. Ujjain recorded about half an inch of rain.

Because of the weather, temperatures dropped in many places. Bhopal recorded 37°C, Indore 36.2°C, Gwalior 38.5°C, Ujjain 41°C, and Jabalpur 37.5°C—falling 3 to 4 degrees in one day. However, places like Khandwa (42.5°C), Khargone (42.4°C), Narsinghpur (42°C), Khajuraho (40.8°C), and Narmadapuram (40.3°C) remained hot.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhopal, on Monday, eastern districts like Maihar, Umaria, Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, Chhindwara, and Pandhurna may see more rain and hail.

In areas like Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Sheopur, and Shivpuri, wind speeds could go over 60 km/h.

In other districts like Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Ratlam, Jhabua, Dhar, Burhanpur, Khargone, Khandwa, Harda, Dewas, Shajapur, Agar-Malwa, Rajgarh, Guna, Ashoknagar, Vidisha, Raisen, Narmadapuram, Betul, Narsinghpur, Sagar, Damoh, Katni, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, Satna, Rewa, Mauganj, Sidhi, and Singrauli, thunder, strong winds, and rain will also continue.
