Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is processing over 500 tons of Bakrid waste and daily produced slaughter waste from the slaughter houses across the capital city into about one ton of poultry and fish feed daily, through a new rendering plant marking the first such initiative in Madhya Pradesh.
According to the BMC officials, the waste, collected over three days from June 7 to 9, was transported to the state’s first rendering plant in Adampur Cantonment.
Built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a cost of ₹20 crore, the plant now produces around one ton of poultry feed daily from slaughter waste.
Earlier, the municipal corporation had to spend nearly ₹20 lakh annually on the collection, transportation and disposal of slaughter waste. The new plant not only eliminates this recurring cost but is also expected to generate an annual profit of ₹1lakh for the corporation.
The rendering plant transforms animal waste into safe and usable feed for poultry and fish, setting a sustainable example for waste-to-resource conversion in urban areas.
Temporary arrangement
To ensure a clean Bakrid this year, the BMC had set up 43 temporary slaughter sites and placed 110 containers across the city for systematic waste collection. Additionally, two secondary collection centres were set up for efficient logistics. The proactive planning, combined with the cooperation of the Muslim community, ensured that no slaughter waste was left unattended this year—unlike previous years, when open pits were used for disposal.

Mayor Malti Rai said that this plant was not only improving the sanitation system, but also converting waste into useful products while protecting the environment. This was a big step towards sustainable development, she said.
