Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A road accident on Sunday in Satna district claimed lives of three people and left 10 others injured, according to police.

The crash took place when a mini truck, which was carrying passengers to Prayagraj for the ongoing Mahakumbh, collided with an SUV on the Satna-Chitrakoot state highway around 1:30 am, approximately 45 kilometres from Satna district headquarters. Majhgawa police station in-charge Aditya Narayan Dhurve said that the truck overturned after colliding with the SUV.

The victims, identified as Mahendra Patel (52), Manisha Patel (31), and her son Jitendra Patel (11), were all passengers in the mini truck.

They were travelling from Jabalpur to Prayagraj to participate in the Mahakumbh celebrations. The occupants of the SUV, which was headed to Damoh after returning from Prayagraj via Chitrakoot, were also involved in the crash.

Besides fatalities, 10 people were injured in the accident. The injured were rushed to the district hospital for medical treatment. The collision caused a significant traffic jam on the highway, which was later cleared by local police.

The Satna-Chitrakoot National Highway (NH-27), a key route used by pilgrims travelling to Prayagraj from Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, has been experiencing heavy congestion, exacerbating the difficulties for travellers. Many pilgrims are spending hours in traffic as they make their way to the Kumbh Mela, causing delays and frustrations along the route.
