Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): Hazira police arrested three alleged cannabis smugglers during a late-night raid in Birla Nagar near the dargah on Monday. The operation, conducted as part of routine checks, led to the recovery of 3 kg of cannabis, with an estimated street value of ₹60,000. The accused were intercepted near the railway tracks, where they were allegedly attempting to offload the contraband.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Chhotu Sharma alias Manish, a resident of Ghasi Mandi near Tansen Talkies; Kamal Batham, from Machli Mandi in Ladhedi; and Lalit Manjhi, hailing from Navapada, Odisha.
During interrogation, the trio confessed to smuggling the cannabis from Odisha to distribute it in Gwalior. Police sources indicate that the accused were part of a larger network, and further investigations are underway to uncover their local connections.
A case has been registered under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Hazira police station in-charge Shivmangal Singh Sengar said that police are probing the supply chain to identify additional suspects involved in the racket.
Family blames cops for inaction after girl’s suicide
Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A 16-year-old girl from a village under the Endori police station area died after consuming poison on May 6. She succumbed during treatment in Gwalior. A week later, no FIR was registered, with the family accusing the police of shielding the accused.
The victim’s father claimed that employees of a nearby private company’s plant harassed his daughter, leading her to take the extreme step. He alleged that before her condition deteriorated en route to Gwalior, she named the accused and recounted the harassment she had faced. Despite this, the police have not initiated an investigation or conducted an inquest.
Endori station in-charge Prashuram Ahirwar said they are waiting for the case diary from Gwalior. However, family members said police are trying to protect the guilty.
