Ashta (Madhya Pradesh): Preparations are underway to convert the Bhopal-Dewas section of the Bhopal-Indore highway from four lanes to six, with focus on reducing traffic congestion and accidents happening at various points including near Ashta.
Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) has begun surveys, with plans for three flyovers and 20 bridges, including key locations near Ashta. The project is estimated to cost Rs 4,000 crore.
Built in 2010 on a BOT model, the 149-km stretch is currently under toll management by a private firm until 2033, with an extension of 257 days due to COVID-19.
However, increased vehicle pressure over 30,000 vehicles daily and the absence of overpasses have led to frequent accidents, particularly near village junctions and unauthorized cut points in Ashta.
Experts have pointed out at the lack of dedicated bike lanes and proper infrastructure as key contributors to accidents. With the expansion and flyover construction, traffic flow is expected to improve significantly.
Environmentalists and local leaders have highlighted the urgent need for the expansion. MPRDC MD Bharat Yadav confirmed ongoing preparations. Meanwhile, MLA Gopal Singh emphasised that the Ashta region will benefit the most. Overbridges are also proposed at high-risk spots like Chowpatty, Kothari, and Amlah.
