Betul (Madhya Pradesh): In a first-of-its-kind operation in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district, police successfully used a drone to track and arrest a rape accused who had been on the run for 10 months, an official said on Saturday.

The accused, 27-year-old Amit Malviya, was arrested earlier this week after police monitored his movements via drone surveillance for two days, said Multai Police Station House Officer (SHO) Devkaran Deheria.

“We tracked his activity using a drone and arrested him on April 29 when he entered his house through the back door,” Deheria stated. A police team was ready and immediately moved in to capture him.

Accused had ₹3k bounty on head

Malviya had been dodging police’s grips since June 2024. He had a bounty of ₹3k announced for information leading to his capture.

He was accused of establishing a sexual relationship with a woman under the threat of killing her, the SHO added.

Betul Superintendent of Police Nischal Jharia said the accused lived in a densely populated area. Hence, he had managed to evade police multiple times in the past.

“This time, we decided to take a different approach and used drone technology to zero in on his exact location and finally arrest him,” he explained.
