Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The marriage of a couple in their early thirties is on the rocks. Not because they dislike each other but because they dislike each other’s parents.

The man works for central government and his wife is a homemaker. Theirs was an arranged marriage that took place eight years ago and they have two children - a son aged eight years and a daughter aged five.

The woman has been living with her parents for the past-one-and-a-half years. She has filed a case seeking maintenance from her husband in Bhopal district family court.

Shail Awasthi, a counsellor dealing with the case, told Free Press that the woman has a long list of complaints against her in-laws. She says that her parents-in-law are into witchcraft to ensure that her husband remains in their control.

The husband hands over his entire salary to his parents and not to her. And instead of taking care of her and their children, he is busy keeping his parents happy. “He is not ready to listen to anything about his parents but readily believes what they tell him about me,” the wife told the counsellor, also alleging that her husband abuses her physically.

The husband claims that he hands over his salary to his wife. “In fact, my wife’s parents are real villains. My mother-in-law keeps provoking my wife against my parents.

And she is so dominating that my father-in-law can’t open his mouth in her presence,” the man told the counsellor. According to Awasthi, there is little possibility of a patch-up between the couple.
