Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new circular asking all recognised schools to clearly show the amount of oil and sugar used in food items sold in the canteen, mess, or cafeteria.

Students in CBSE schools will now get to know how much oil and sugar is in their favourite snacks like samosas, pastries, juice, or tea.

According to information, this step has been taken to fight rising cases of obesity, diabetes, and other health problems among children.

CBSE believes that if students are aware of what they are eating and how many calories, sugar, and fat it contains, they will become more careful about their food choices.

In Gwalior, all CBSE schools will now place boards outside their canteens with nutritional details of each snack.

For example, a 100-gram samosa contains around 28 grams of oil and gives about 362 calories. A 300ml cold drink has around 32 grams of sugar and 132 calories.

A Healthy Initiative

Retired child specialist Dr. A.P.S. Jadon said this step is very important, especially for teenagers.

At this age, unhealthy eating can lead to obesity, heart diseases, and diabetes in the future. He added that this move will help children become more aware of healthy food habits.

Vinay Jhalani, a principal of a private school, appreciated CBSE’s decision and said it’s time to teach students about nutrition too. He confirmed that the school will soon start putting up these nutrition boards.
