Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A woman’s love for making reels has led to the end of her 12-year-old marriage in the city. The 30-year-old woman agreed to get divorced from her husband, rather than stop making reels. Divorce of the couple with mutual consent was approved by Bhopal District Family Court recently.

The woman works in a play school whereas her husband is a labourer. They are parents of a one-year-old boy. She said that the husband is a drunkard, who used to abuse her and even indulge in violence against her. After marriage, she got education and then a job in a play school.  Subsequently, she started making reels on her mobile phone for Facebook and Instagram.

The response was good and soon she started earning between Rs 15k and Rs 20k every month. Also, she developed contacts with other reel makers and started getting calls on her mobile. Some people visited her home to meet her.  That was not acceptable to her husband. ‘He was jealous of my growing popularity and income,’ the woman told her counsellor at the Court.  The husband asked her to stop making reels but she flatly refused. The dispute grew and ultimately, they decided to go their own ways. They filed for divorce with mutual consent, which was granted.

Shail Awasthi, a counsellor at the Family Court, said that social media was a villain in around 60pc cases of marital disputes. ‘Often, one partner gets addicted to one or other social media platforms and the other feels neglected. Marriage comes under strain if none of the two is ready to compromise,’ she said.
