Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Not only violation of traffic rules, but poor coordination between traffic police and other concerned departments are also responsible for frequent road mishaps which are claiming lives of people.

Traffic police is in action mode after the recent mishap at Banganga Crossing in which a young BAMS intern lost her life. Officials are reviewing different factors which may help in controlling road mishaps and casualties.

After series of constructions of new roads, flyovers, ROBs etc many black spots have emerged in the city where road mishaps are taking place repeatedly.

Traffic police officials have recently identified 16 such black spots where poor engineering and other factors were causing mishaps. Traffic officials have forwarded letters to PWD, Nagar Nigam and other concerned agencies for taking necessary action.

Traffic officials said that blind turns, too much curves on roads, unnecessary pillars, poles, unnecessary cuts in road dividers, encroachments, absence of street lights, large traffic circle or circular intersections are not only causing frequent road mishaps but are big factors behind traffic snarls slowing vehicular movements at many places in the city. Letters have been written to PWD, Nagar Nigam and other agencies in this regard, the officials added.

It is worth mentioning that the black spots have been identified on the basis of the number of road mishaps that occurred at the concerned spot. Four agencies--PWD, Nagar Nigam, Smart City and MPRDC are responsible for construction and maintaining of roads, flyovers etc in the city with PWD having the largest share. DCP Traffic Sanjay Singh said besides identification of black spots, Traffic police has also suggested for six new flyovers at different places which will improve traffic movement and reduce road mishaps.

Black spots

The spots with significantly higher accident rate are 110 quarter Hanuman Temple in Habibganj, 1250 Crossing, Vyapam Crossing, Paryawas Bhawan Crossing, DB Mall Crossing, Platinum Plaza at Atal Path, Tarun Pushkar Trisection, ISBT turn in Govindpura area, Ratnagiri Trisection in Piplani, Ashima Mall in Misrod area, Samardha bridge, 11 mile, Bag Sewania Crossing, Best Price Trisection, People Mall area in Nishatpura and area opposite Chirayu Hospital at Khajuri Sadak.

Police intercept 298 buses and heavy vehicles

Continuing action against vehicles running on city roads in violation of rules, the traffic police on Friday intercepted 298 buses and heavy vehicles at 19 checkpoints across the city. Traffic officials said action has been taken against 77 buses which were running in violation of traffic rules under Motor Vehicles Act. The drive will continue till month end.
