Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Take note, failing to ensure toilets facility for labourers may prove costly for landlords. Three house owners ended up paying a spot fine of Rs 5000 each as the labourers working at their construction sites were found defecating in the open on Sunday.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) health department team collected a spot fine of Rs 15000 from the three landlords. A team of the civic body health department during an inspection in the morning at construction sites found the labourers relieving themselves in the open.

The team found that the labourers were engaged in construction of houses in Ashiana Green Custom Colony (Ward No. 83) and in absence of any toilet facility they had no option but to defecate in the open.

The BMC team imposed a spot fine of Rs 5,000 each on three house owners of the Colony.

The Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban aims to fulfil the objective of 100% Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in all the Urban Local Bodies(ULBs). The ODF protocol is followed for declaring and certifying ODF status of cities.

This toolkit on SBM ODF+ and SBM ODF++ protocols includes sustainability aspects including improved access to individual toilets, community and public toilet maintenance, functionality and liquid waste / fecal sludge and septage management.
