Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In a significant medical milestone, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at AIIMS Bhopal successfully performed its first Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) procedure on Thursday.

In this procedure, a small sample of placental tissue (chorionic villi) was collected and sent for genetic testing. This prenatal test helps detect potential genetic disorders in the baby.

AIIMS director Prof. Ajai Singh said, “Completing the first Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS0 at AIIMS Bhopal is an important step towards advancement in fetal medicine services at our institution. This achievement reflects our commitment to providing comprehensive maternal and fetal care.”

How CVS is beneficial?

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test that checks for genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in a fetus by taking a tissue sample from the placenta.

CVS is used to detect conditions like Down's syndrome, Edwards' syndrome, or Patau's syndrome, pre-birth. CVS is suggested to parents when there's are indications of a high risk for the baby's health condition.

The risks can be predicted during screening tests, or if there's a family history of a health condition.

What are genetic diseases?

Genetic diseases are health conditions caused by abnormalities in an individual's DNA. These abnormalities can involve single gene mutations, multiple genes, or entire chromosomes.

They are basically inherited from one or both parents but can also occur due to spontaneous changes in the DNA (mutations). Genetic diseases may lead to a wide range of physical, developmental, or functional challenges, depending on the genes or chromosomes affected.
