Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh): Around 300 goats were sacrificed on Monday during a religious event in Vidisha.

The incident took place at Thakur Baba’s temple site in Tiloni village, under Lateri Janpad in Madhya Pradesh. The mass sacrifice took place near a banyan tree, around 200 meters from the main religious site, as part of rituals organised by hundreds of devotees.

People from Sironj, Shamshabad, Biaora, and Suthaliya gathered at the event. Many brought goats with them specifically for the sacrifice. Eyewitnesses said the goat killings continued throughout the day.

Animal sacrifice is strictly regulated under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and other government rules. Despite this, local authorities were unaware of such a large-scale incident happening just near the Lateri headquarters.

When contacted, Lateri SDM Vineet Tiwari said he had no information about the event. After being informed, he said, “We will investigate the matter.”

Uday Yadav, a young resident of Tiloni, said the sacrifice tradition began only a few years ago, even though the temple of Thakur Baba is very old.

He shared that people from outside the village visit the site on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in large numbers.

Yadav said he has tried to raise awareness to stop the practice but has not been successful.

Now, he says, the administration needs to take serious steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
