Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): AIIMS’s Department of General Surgery has operating on a 65-year-old woman suffering from an extremely complex condition.
The patient had been dealing with a massive goiter for several years, which had recently become severe. Due to the excessive enlargement of the goiter, she began facing significant difficulty in breathing, along with noticeable changes in her voice.
Concerned about her deteriorating health, she consulted the General Surgery OPD at AIIMS Bhopal, where doctors promptly examined her and admitted her for further care.

Investigations revealed that the goiter had grown to such an extent that it was putting pressure on the trachea and other vital neck structures, making the situation highly sensitive and life-threatening. Performing surgery under such conditions was an immense challenge.
This complex surgery was successfully led by Prof. Dr. Manish Swarnkar and Dr. Krishna Kumar from the Department of General Surgery. During the multi-hour operation, the thyroid gland was carefully removed with utmost precision to ensure the safety of the recurrent laryngeal nerves (responsible for voice) and the parathyroid glands.
The surgery was completely successful, and the patient is now recovering swiftly under medical supervision.
Prof. Dr. Manish Swarnkar said, “Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment of thyroid-related disorders are crucial. Any further delay could have proven fatal for the patient.”
Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh said, “This complex surgery reflects the clinical expertise, team spirit, and deep commitment to service at AIIMS Bhopal. Our goal is not just to deliver advanced treatment, but to ensure timely, life-saving solutions for every patient in need—so that healthcare truly becomes a tool for public welfare.”
