The Maharashtra Transport Department has given vehicle owners more time to install high-security registration plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. The original deadline of April 30, 2025, has now been extended to June 30 of this year. Owners can apply for HSRP installation through the official Maharashtra Transport Department website or visit authorised centres across the state.

High-security registration plates (HSRPs) have been mandatory on all new vehicles sold in India since July 2022, with dealers fitting them at the time of purchase. Vehicles registered after April 1, 2019, have also been required to install HSRPs.

In an effort to bring older vehicles into compliance, the Maharashtra government extended this rule last year to include all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Initially, the deadline for this was set as March 31, 2025, but it has now been extended for the second time, providing vehicle owners additional time for compliance.

High-security registration plates (HSRPs) are designed to prevent tampering and counterfeiting. Made from aluminium, these plates include several security features such as a 3D hologram of the Ashoka Chakra, a laser-etched serial number, and a reflective film with the word ‘India’ printed on it. They are installed using a snap-lock mechanism, which makes them difficult to remove without causing damage, ensuring better protection against misuse or duplication.
