Chipko March Rocks Pune: Over 5k Punekars Take To Streets To Save Rivers And Trees

Hundreds of Punekars joined the 'Chipko March' in Pune. The protest was against the felling of trees for the River Front Development project

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk also participated in the protest. Actor Sayaji Shinde showed his support as well.

The march began at 3:30 pm from Kalmadi High School in Baner. Protesters walked to the Ram-Mula confluence

They demanded an eco-friendly and sustainable river rejuvenation plan

The marchers called for a clean and safe river. They also hugged the trees to show their commitment

They called for efforts to clean and preserve the river, ensuring that it remains safe for future generations

The Jeevitnadi-Living River Foundation, along with several other NGOs, have been vocal in their opposition to the project, citing concerns over tree removal and waste disposal in the riverbed

This is the second big environmental march in Pune, following the Vetal Tekdi protest

The Mula-Mutha Riverfront project, approved in 2018, spans 44 kilometers and is part of a ₹4,727 crore plan to beautify the riverbanks
