Aly Goni To Saif Ali Khan: Celebs Denied Houses In Mumbai Due To Muslim Identity

Television actor Aly Goni opened up about facing religious discrimination while house hunting with his girlfriend, Jasmin Bhasin, before they moved in together.

Aly Goni said, "I were searching for a house, but many people rejected us, saying, 'Hum Muslims ko ghar nahi dete.'"

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan once revealed in an interview that he was unable to purchase a house in Juhu, Mumbai, due to his Muslim identity. He recalled the exchange, saying, "Try to buy a house in Juhu being a Muslim, and you’ll be denied, with people saying, 'We don’t give houses to Muslims.'

Actress and social media personality Uorfi Javed once tweeted that Muslim landlords refused to rent her a house because of the way she dressed, while Hindu landlords did not want to rent to her because she was Muslim.

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi revealed that he wanted to buy a house in the posh Pali Hill area, but the housing society refused to grant him the NOC due to his Muslim identity. The actor alleged, "Some people told me that the society was biased against Muslims. They did not tell me directly but it is obvious."

Television actor Zain Imam opened up about the difficulties he faced while searching for housing due to his Muslim identity, even revealing that he had to sleep in his car for a period.

Yeh Hai Mohabbatein actress Shireen Mirza also had a similar experience. In an old Facebook post, she wrote, "I don't deserve to get a house in Mumbai because I'm M.B.A.—MUSLIM, BACHELOR, ACTOR." She shared that once a broker called another person and asked whether she was Hindu or Muslim, then responded that Muslims were not preferred. They also suggested taking the flat in her friend's name, who was not a Muslim.
