By: Manasi Kamble | May 12, 2025

On July 3, 2018, Gokhale Bridge partially collapsed, leading to two fatalities. By November 7, 2022, it was fully closed due to severe structural concerns, disrupting traffic.

In March 2023, Gokhale Bridge reconstruction starts post-demolition, facing delays in steel girder delivery challenges.

On February 26, 2024, the west-to-east arm of the reconstructed Gokhale Bridge opens for light vehicles, despite height restrictions and delays.

Between February and July 2024, a significant 6-foot misalignment is found between the Gokhale Bridge and C.D. Barfiwala Flyover, prompting public criticism. From April to July, BMC, with IIT-Bombay and VJTI, works on correcting this issue by lifting the flyover spans with hydraulic jacks.

On July 4, 2024, the Barfiwala Flyover Connector partially opens, enabling smoother traffic flow for light vehicles between Gokhale Bridge and Barfiwala Flyover.

On May 11, 2025, the Gokhale Bridge fully reopened, including the second arm, ending a 30-month wait for commuters and promising to alleviate traffic congestion significantly.

On May 12, 2025, the Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge in Andheri reopened for vehicles and residents, inaugurated by BJP leaders Ashish Shelar, Amit Satam, and Shiv Sena leader Ravindra Waikar.
