It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram as a substitute.

The meat from the sacrifice is divided into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor and needy. This act emphasises sharing wealth and helping those less fortunate.
