Islamabad: Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Asif admitted that Pakistan had supported terror activities for decades. During an interview with UK-based Sky News, Asif said that Pakistan does not have an unimpeachable track record as it had supported terror groups for the West, including the United States and Britain.
When asked by anchor Yalda Hakim about Pakistan's long history of backing, supporting training and funding these terrorist organisations, Asif said, "Well, we have been doing this dirty work for the United States for about three decades, you know, and west, including Britain. That was a mistake, and we suffered for that."
"And that is why you are saying this to me. If we had not, joined the war, against the Soviet Union and later on the war after nine eleven, this, Pakistan's track record was unimpeachable," he added.
Khawaja Asif's Statement:
He also lashed out at the US for putting the blame on Pakistan for funding terrorists.“It is very convenient for the big powers to blame, Pakistan for what whatever is happening in this region. When we were fighting the war on their side in way back in the eighties against Soviet Union, all these, terrorists of today, they were wining and dining-in in Washington,” the Pakistan defence minister said.
“And then came, the the the nine eleven attacks. Again, the same situation was repeated. I think our, our, governments then made a mistake,” he added. Asif said that the US used terrorist organisations, including Taliban as its proxies.
Asif's remarks came amid tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. For long India has been accusing Pakistan of supporting and funding terror activities across the border. The terrorist attack which took place in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, resulted in the death of 28 people, including a local pony guide.
Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba’s (LeT’s) offshoot The Resistance F4ront (TRF) claimed responsibility for the ghastly attack. Digital footprints of the terrorists involved in the attack were reportedly traced to Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Karachi.
On April 22, five to six terrorists opened fire on tourists at Baisaran meadows near Pahalgam. They singled out Hindu males and killed them.
