Adelaide (Australia): An Indian student was hospitalised following a brutal and allegedly racially motivated attack in central Adelaide, triggering widespread condemnation and renewed demands for stronger protections for foreign students in Australia.

Details On The Attack

The victim, 23-year-old Charanpreet Singh, was with his wife near Kintore Avenue around 9:22 pm on Saturday (local time), July 19, when he was reportedly ambushed by a group of five men. According to reports citing eyewitness accounts and social media footage, the assailants exited another vehicle armed with what appeared to be metal knuckles or sharp objects. The couple had just parked their car to view the city’s popular light displays when the attack occurred.

Racial Slurs, Abusive Language Used During Attack

The men allegedly launched into a violent assault without provocation, striking Singh multiple times while hurling racial slurs, including “F*** off, Indian.” Singh told 9News that what started as a minor parking dispute quickly spiralled into a racially charged attack. “They just said, ‘F*** off, Indian,’ and after that they just started punching,” he said.

The assault left Singh unconscious on the road, with reports confirming he suffered serious injuries including facial fractures and suspected brain trauma. Emergency services responded swiftly and transported him to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he received overnight treatment.

South Australia Police confirmed that officers were dispatched to Kintore Avenue just before 9:30 pm after reports of an assault. “When police arrived, they located the 22-year-old victim on the floor with facial injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Investigations are continuing,” a police spokesperson told The Indian Sun.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as 'deeply disturbing' and vowing that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. “There is no place for racism or violence in our state,” he said.

One Arrested & Charged In Connection With Attack

So far, one suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident, while the search continues for the remaining attackers. CCTV footage from the well-surveilled Kintore Avenue area is being thoroughly examined by authorities. Police have urged anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.
