Canada: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, June 17, delivered a powerful message at the G7 Summit’s Outreach Sessions in Kananaskis, spotlighting the pressing concerns of terrorism, energy security, AI governance, and the plight of the Global South.
Addressing global leaders, he underlined India’s role in amplifying marginalised voices and safeguarding collective futures.
PM’s Caution to Global Powers on Terrorism
Drawing attention to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Modi said the assault was not just on India but on the “soul, identity, and dignity of every Indian and indeed, on humanity itself.”
Thanking global leaders for their support, he called for strict accountability of countries that promote terrorism, urging, “There must be no ambiguity. If a country supports terrorism, it must be held accountable.”
Raising questions for the global community, Modi asked, “Will countries understand the grave threat posed by terrorism only when they become a target? How can perpetrators of terror and its victims be equated?” He emphasised on the need for consistency in international responses and warned against rewarding nations that shelter terror.
India Champions Energy Equality
In the outreach session on energy security, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s focus on green, inclusive energy transitions. “Artificial Intelligence itself is an energy-intensive technology. The only sustainable way to meet the energy demands of a technology-driven world is through renewable energy," he said.
Highlighting India’s leadership in climate commitments, Modi added that renewable energy already makes up 50% of India’s installed capacity and reaffirmed the country’s pledge to reach Net Zero by 2070.
On technology, Modi called for urgent global frameworks to tackle AI misuse, especially deepfakes. “There must be clear watermarks or disclosures on AI-generated content,” he said. He added that true technological progress must be inclusive, no country, especially in the Global South, should be left behind.
